Holy Toledo!

We've survived Day 1. After 577 miles, we pulled into Toledo, OH at 10:30 tonight. After finding out yesterday that we could take the trip, we had a lot of last minute things to take care of that we had put off because we thought the trip would be cancelled. We finally got to bed around 1:30 in the morning, and somehow got ourselves up and at'em and on the road by 9:15 this morning.

We drove west on the PA turnpike and headed to the Ohiopyle, PA area to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Fallingwater. Some of the stairs were tough on Lisa's knee, but we took our time and she did great. Then back on the road towards Ohio. A long day, but we covered a lot of ground.

A few notes from the day:
1) Ohio Turnpike reststops are awesome, complete with Panera Bread. And they're clean too.
2) We kept on thinking it was starting to rain as we heard the raindrops hit the windshield, only to realize they were large bugs. We stopped counting them after 200 or so.
3) A surprisingly large number of towns had thier 4th of July Fireworks tonight, on the 30th of June. Made the last part of the day exciting.
4) I can never live in a Frank Llyod Wright house, as he built them all for people 5'8", his height. Most of the ceilings were at 6'4", about a half inch away from the top of my head.

It's getting late and we're heading to the land of Knute Rockne and Rudy Ruettiger - Notre Dame - for 10:00 mass and some sightseeing tomorrow and then on to Chicago. Here are today's pictures. Click the slideshow to see them larger.

Oh, and here are three pictures from the day Lisa snapped her ACL. The two pictures in the hospital were taken on my phone, so please excuse the quality.

Westward Ho!

Last Minute Descision...

Well, today is the day we were supposed to leave for our trip, but we've had an exciting week! On Tuesday, Lisa and I had our last kickball game of the season. Kickball, you ask? Yes, that kickball, the same game you played in second grade. Punch Apparel (my t-shirt company) has sponsored a team in the Delaware Sports League. We now have a stellar 0-6 record, but we are the best team at the bars afterwards. Regardless, during our last game, my dear wife went down running into second base (Safe by the way) and needed to be carried off the field by yours truly.

So after a trip to the emergency room on Tuesday evening, a visit to an orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday, an MRI on Thursday and another trip to the orthopedic surgeon on Friday, we've come to two conclusions. The first - Lisa has no ACL anymore. Torn. Result of a skiing injury about 5 years ago and the kickball game. The second, we can still go on our road trip - surprisingly. The Doc wasn't so sure about it on Wednesday because he didn't know the extent of the injury, but after seeing the MRI, he cleared Lisa for the trip, and actually suggested it would be the best thing for her as long as we didn't do major hikes.

So she's walking around, although gingerly, and should be walking normally within a few days. She's got a fancy brace with hinges to help her knee from giving out again. Once she regains muscle strength in her leg, she'll be able to go in for some reconstructive surgery. The doctor actually said surgery isn't necessary if she doesn't intend on staying active, but I'm sure when little Fusco's come around in a few years, she'll be needing that knee!

So without further ado, here is the revised intinerary, and later today I'll post some pictures of that fantastic knee! The only thing we had to cut out was a trip to Cedar Point Amusement park in Sandusky, OH, but I'm sure we'll make it there some other time.

Welcome to the Blog

Hey Friends,

If you are reading this, you've most likely been sent the link to read about the trip that Lisa and I are taking cross country this summer. The trip is 22 days and we'll cover about 7500 miles across this great nation. Whenever we get the chance (read: free high speed internet) we'll be updating this blog with where we've been, where we're going and pictures. Feel free to check back whenever. I hope to post an itinerary before we leave. In the meantime, just to check out the picture linking functionality, check out the slideshow below of my attempt at learning how to take fancy pictures of water with faster and slower shutter speeds. Clicking on the slideshow will bring you to Picasa, where you can see a larger slideshow.

Thanks for reading!
